岡崎直志(1911-1976)/ Okazaki Naoshi

略歴

1911:山形県西村山郡西川町の宿坊経営叶直家・雅代の次男に生まれる。

1926:高等小学校卒業したあと食料品卸商に勤める。

1932:入隊兵役。

1935:除隊。

1937:応召

1940:4月に帰還。米沢市小野川の岡崎菊子結婚する久太郎夫妻の婿養子となる。7月頃よりこけしを作りはじめる。

1941:長男昭一誕生。

1944:応召。

1946:帰還。

1949:動力ロクロを導入する。

1951:養父久太郎没。

1976:1月6日没。

【English edition】 Biography of Naoshi Okazaki

Born July 1, 1911 as the second son of Masayo Kano. The Kano family ran a shukubo for worshipers of Mt. Haguro.

After graduating from high school in 1926, he worked for a grocery wholesaler, but joined the military in 1932 and was discharged in 1935. He was called in 1937 and returned in April 1940.

He married Kikuko Okazaki, the eldest daughter of Kyutaro, in Onogawa, Yonezawa, and became the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kyutaro. After that, he trained under Kyutaro and began to make kokeshi dolls from around July 1940.

And in 1941, his eldest son Shoichi was born.

In 1944 he was again called by the army and returned in the fall of 1946.

Around this time, Ikuo Okazaki of Zao Takayu came to Naoshi to learn about Kokeshi.

His adoptive father, Kyutaro, died in 1951.

After that, he made kokeshi dolls while running a souvenir shop in Onogawa. From 1961, his eldest son, Shoichi, also began training in wood. His wife Kikuko passed away in 1968.
And, He died on January 6, 1976. 66 years old.
